Laser Engraving and Laser Etching

Red Box offers a full laser tool engraving and laser etching service, which, not only enables you to engrave your tools, but also many other items such as trophies, plaques, jewellery and much more too.  Using a state of the art Laser Marking Station, we can engrave/etch a broad range of products, from the very smallest to large size items.

Tool control is where we specialise. Tool engraving helps ensure your tools remain yours, so never again can you be questioned as to if a tool belongs to you. Laser engraving and laser etching also assists when assigning tools to specific kits. Kits can be designed for specific people and tasks, engraving/etching the tool assists in returning the tool back to the correct kit.

In a previous article, we have highlighted 5 interesting facts about laser engraving and laser etching, which include the processes being hugely popular way for businesses to develop brand awareness.

What are the Differences Between the Two Processes?

Although laser etching is quicker, laser engraving is more long-lasting. This is because etching uses less energy than vaporising, which is used in the engraving process . Deep laser engraving may need many laser passes and, as a result, more time.

The holes produced by engraving, on the other hand, are more resistant to wear than the higher markings created by etching. In fact, laser etching elevation can be as high as 80 microns, while laser engraving depth can be as low as 500 microns.

Ollie Dog Tag with Bespoke Laser EngravingWhen it comes to making high-contrast marks, laser etching stands out. Laser engraving produces solely black markings, but etching produces both black and white marks. As a result, high-contrast engravings are frequently created by combining both engraving with etching.

Unless you want a high level of abrasion resistance, etching is preferable than engraving.

Red Box is based in Totton, Southampton and you can bring your items directly into our shop.  Red Box also offer a mail service and our services have been trusted by companies all over the world.

Shadow Boarding

Foam it, find it.

Shadow Boarding is an organisation solution in which tools and equipment sit in foam, hung on the wall, this is to achieve an organised workplace where tools, supplies and equipment are stored in appropriate locations close to the work area.

Tool shadow boards reduce the amount of time wasted on searching for the right tools and allows you to easily see what tools are available at the time, if any are missing and help you to get on with the task in hand more efficiently.

So, how exactly do we make a shadow board? We use custom foam that is then cut with a CNC Router, which is a computer controlled system. The tools required are then scanned using an electric pen and board, which provides us with an accurate drawing, which then creates tool paths that are directed to the CNC Router and then “tool path lines” are cut extremely accurately into the foam layer.

Tool shadow boarding is the partner to shadow tool foam and allows you to keep your tools safe and tidy at home, work or in the garage, whilst Shadow Foaming® allows you to keep your tools safe whilst on the go. In addition, our tool shadow board foam also include Red Box’s Push Point Technology™, making it easier for you to gain access to your tools than ever before.

What are the Benefits of Shadow Boarding?

  • Quickly highlights any missing tools
  • Improves workplace organisation
  • Can be fully colour coded
  • Fully customisable to your requirements
  • Not just limited to tools

What is Shadow Foaming®?

It is a customisable and versatile grade of foam. This means that we can cut and shape it to fit any of your existing tools. It is available in a range of colors too. All bespoke sheets are covered with a clear rubber layer, making them extremely durable and perfect for any industry. The biggest advantage is that your tools will be easy to spot within your set.

How do you cut it?

  • Our custom inserts begin with using a CNC Router  to cut the foam
  • We scan the tools using an electric pen and board, which allows us to create an accurate drawing.
  • The drawing creates tool paths that are then sent to the computer and directed to the router, which then cuts along these “tool path lines”.
  • This creates an extremely accurate cut out of each tool shape in the insert.

All CNC tool foam comes complete with Push Point Technology™, making it even easier to gain access to your equipment.

Shadow Foaming®

Foam it, find it.

Shadow Foaming® is the process in which we create bespoke foams for any tools, items or accessories to sit in. The foam we use is versatile and can be cut easily. Shadow Foaming® is a material that is strong enough to withstand daily use, so you don’t need to worry about it getting worn or tearing.

There are a wide range of industries that we can create bespoke foams for, but we are most commonly asked to produce custom tool foam for our customers.

How does it work?

Whatever you need to fit into your foams, we can create a bespoke design to fit your needs. We take a scan of your items, which is then created digitally where our design team create the custom foams.

Once the bespoke shadowing foam design has been completed, the design is cut into the foam using a router. This cuts each shape precisely. The foams are then cleaned up and sent back to you, ready to use!

What are the benefits of bespoke Shadow Foaming®?

Shadow Foaming® acts as an organisation tool. Each item has its own slot cut out into the shadowing foam, therefore no more rummaging through a tool kit to find what you need. The foam is two-toned, the top layer is black with another colour underneath. This means that you can easily see the coloured under layer showing if an item is missing.

Shadow Foaming® also provides a protective layer for your belongings when they are inside their case. This prevents items from becoming damaged.
